Conversion from a damp dungeon to a beautiful wine cellar
AP Gooch were appointed to convert a damp dungeon in the 300 year-old mansion in Essex in to a wine cellar. We undertook a full basement conversion using a cavity drain system and twin pump sewage chamber.
The design
We initially undertook the design of the waterproofing system, using an internal cavity drainage membrane system, classified as ‘Type C’ waterproofing by BS 8102:2009, which we decided would be the safest and most effective solution.
The basement was initially very damp and unusable
Step one was to clear the existing walls to maximise the space
Installation of a twin pump sewage chamber, giving complete reliability
The Solution
We began by installing a sewage chamber. This was followed by a floor build-up consisting of a basedrain to channel captured water, thermal insulation board and spacer, and cavity drain membrane.
Cavity drain membrane was then installed on the walls as the first form of defence. The system delivers captured water to a twin pump sewage chamber, the two pumps (primary and backup) giving a safe and reliable system of removing captured water from the building.
The Result
Now fully protected by a maintainable system, compliant with waterproofing code of practice BS 8102:2009, the wine cellar is now dry, fully fitted out, including toilet facilities.
